Mount Morris Fire Watchtower
In October 2019, AYON Studio joined the Harlem community in celebrating the re-opening of the Mount Morris Fire Watchtower in Marcus Garvey Park. Originally designed by Julius Kroehl and constructed in 1857, this cast iron structure is the last surviving tower of its kind in New York City. Since 2000, Principal Angel Ayón has been advising all stakeholders in the fight to save and restore this beloved neighborhood landmark.
Reglazing Modernism
Co-authored by AYON Studio Principal Angel Ayón, Reglazing Modernism: Intervention Strategies for 20th Century Icons (Birkhäuser, 2019) has been featured in numerous book talks, lectures, presentations, and published excerpts.
This comprehensive study looks at the deterioration of curtain and window walls in modern architecture and outlines various intervention approaches.
Presented in an easy-to-read format with 20 case studies, it won the 2021 Lee Nelson Book Award from APT for the most outstanding and influential book-length work on preservation technology in North America.

Celebrating recent milestones! Principal Angel Ayón’s upcoming publication, Preserving Modernism: Post-War Curtain Renewal is set for release in October and available for pre-order. AYON Studio recently celebrated the public unveiling of the Brooklyn Public Library Pacific Branch renovation. We’re pleased to announce the forthcoming publication of Preserving Modernism: Post-War Curtain Wall Renewal, co-edited by AYON Studio Principal Angel Ayón and Uta Pottgiesser and scheduled for release by Birkhäuser in October 2026. A follow-up to Reglazing Modernism: Intervention Strategies for 20th-Century Icons, the new volume shifts from a concise history of the modern curtain wall to twenty in-depth case studies from North America and Europe.
AYON Studio joined Safdie Architects and the Brooklyn Public Library on September 18th to unveil the designs for the Brooklyn Public Library’s Pacific Library branch.
The historic branch has served the Downtown Brooklyn neighborhood since 1904. AYON Studio is serving as Architect of Record and Preservation Architect on the project, collaborating with Safdie Architects, the Design Architect.
On July 30th, members of the AYON Studio team joined the Northeast Chapter of the Association for Preservation Technology for a two-hour cruise along the Hudson River. As a long-time sponsor of APTNE, AYON Studio was thrilled to support the event and spend the evening celebrating the chapter's ongoing work organizing regional and local preservation events and outreach for the region’s preservation community.
