Theater 80

80 St. Marks Place, New York, NY

This East Village theater, located on St. Marks Place between First and Second Avenues, was reminiscent of a speakeasy nightclub built during the Prohibition era. Converted into the existing use and configuration in 1964 and known since as Theater 80, this unassuming cultural institution remained a key venue in the storied neighborhood until COVID-19 effectively shut down New York City’s performing arts scene in March 2020.

In response to the challenges posed by the ongoing public health emergency, Theater 80’s owners reached out to AYON Studio to help reconfigure the interior for social distancing and extended food and beverage service from the adjacent tavern. Our renovation design called for the temporary removal of much of the existing fixed seating in the theater auditorium, which made way for the installation of large platforms with dining tables. AYON Studio prepared Construction Documents for the project, assisted with submitting for and securing DOB approval, as well as a Temporary Use Permit, and oversaw the construction.
